Over the weekend kangaroos often outnumbered golfers for the fourth leg of the six-part Outback Queensland Masters, with local Barcaldine golfer winning the converted orange jacket.
In a fun golfing adventure for all involved at the Barcaldine Golf Club, local resident Steve Egerton was the men’s winner with a total of 42 points, and Suzanne Hagon from the Grafton District Golf Club was the women’s winner, also scorning a total 42 points.
Some curious characters and onlookers were sighted in the wings of the fairways, with players citing the resident kangaroos as true-blue Aussie markers keeping score of the game.
Barcaldine, affectionately referred to by locals as Barky lies in the heart of Outback Queensland along the Matilda Highway, known at the outback’s ‘garden city’ due its connection to the Great Artesian Basin, it attracts many visitors, including hundreds of golfing enthusiasts over the weekend who have joined the 1,600km outback golf journey.
Having completed their first four locations in Birdsville, Boulia, Winton and Barcaldine they’re heading onto Charleville 13th and 14th July and culminating in Quilpie with a Million-Dollar Hole-In-One challenge from the 19th to the 21st July.
Golf Australia Events General Manager, Therese Magdulski said , “The event is presented by Golf Australia, and we would especially like to thank our strategic partner Tourism and Events Queensland and Birdie Spirit Partners PGA of Australia, Rex Airlines and BCL Production Services.
“Support from local golf clubs and their members who so eagerly embraced the masters has been integral to this success. The Boulia Golf Club and their volunteers again supported the Outback Queensland Masters.
“We could not have been staged without assistance from local government, including the Barcaldine Regional Council, Boulia Shire Council, Diamantina Shire Council Winton Shire Council, Murweh Shire Council and Quilpie Shire Council. Thanks to our Mateship Partners Bushnell Golf, Drummond Golf, Callaway, IJS Productions and Your Mates Brewing Co.”
