The Outback Queensland Masters treated participants to golf and entertainment in Roma.

Roma came out in force to support the Outback Queensland Masters.

Up-and-coming junior golfers officially launched celebrations on Monday at Roma Golf Club, with juniors hitting the opening tee shots which was followed by a free junior clinic conducted by PGA Members Darren Weatherall and Sam Eaves.

Local Josh Lambert tasted success in the men’s 18 hole stableford division yesterday, finishing the event with 41 points.

“It is my home course so I should go alright,” said an enthused Lambert.

“I am looking forward to playing in Charleville this weekend and finishing up the tournament in Mount Isa (in July).”

On the women’s side, Kathy Beck was crowned a dual champion winning the individual event with 35 points (ocb) and teaming up with Scott Thomson to win the team’s event with a combined total of 74 points.

The local netball community also got involved with the event, catering and serving delicious food to hungry and appreciative golfers and spectators.

Players and entertainment seekers alike enjoyed music from barefoot hillbilly pop artists, The Pigs, followed by a performance from award winning poet and storyteller Marco Gliori. Participants were also treated to a traditional Welcome to Country & Smoking Ceremony from Rodney Landers.

Mayor Tyson Golder attended the day’s festivities to raise funds for the golf club, auctioning off the 1st tee flag.

Yabby races were also a big hit with players invited to bid on the race with local John Lethbridge picking the winner.

Attendees were extremely impressed with the under the stars dining experience and the quality of entertainment provided on Monday night.

Many players are looking forward to continuing their journey through the outback with Charleville hosting the next event this weekend.

Thank you to Maranoa Council for the support of the Roma event, Horse Torque for player prizes and Roma Golf Club for presenting the course in terrific condition.
