Three things to do in Hughenden

Porcupine-Gorge-National-Park-Lookout-near-Hughenden-R

Pack your hard-hat and sense of adventure – just four hours’ drive west of Townsville, Hughenden is the most northerly destination on the Outback Queensland Masters.

It’s packed with dinosaur fossils, jaw-dropping scenery and mining history that will lead you deep underground.

See our top 3 things to do:

1. Say g’day to Hughie at the Flinders Discovery Centre

Hughie-R

When you get to Hughenden – say g’day to ‘Hughie’, the seven metre-tall Muttaburrasaurus and the impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre. Displaying amazing exhibits of fossils from around the world, as well as an extensive and growing display of fossils from the local area. ‘Hughie” is the star attraction; a life size skeletal replica of a Muttaburrasaurus.

Don’t leave the centre without witnessing the amazing light and sound show that takes you back over 500 million years to the beginning of the formation of Porcupine Gorge.

2. Take an eco walk

Enjoy a walk along the diverse bioregions of the Flinders Shire at Eco Walk on Flinders. These ecosystems have been replicated along the northern banks of the Flinders River with over 1.5km of walking tracks. Along the pathway are species of flora and local artworks illustrating important events, and the myriad of diversity of the Flinders Shire.

3. Explore the Outback National Parks

Gorge-R

Just outside Hughenden, Mount Walker rises out of the flat back soil plains, proving a great location for grazing across town and around the district.

Further afield, Porcupine Gorge National Park is a spectacular gorge often referred to as Australia’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’. The first lookout gives you an indication of the depth and magnitude of the gorge and is a ‘must see’ for all visitors. Camping grounds are located at the Pyramid Lookout; campers should take their own water and be full self-sufficient. Contact Parks and Wildlife for permits.
