Two lucky Kiwis will win their way to Australia for a shot at a Million Dollar Hole-In-One on the edge of the Simpson Desert in Outback Queensland.
Outback Queensland Masters in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland is offering a once-in-a-lifetime Golden Ticket for two people to Queensland’s most western frontier.
The Golden ticket includes return flights from Auckland to Birdsville, accommodation, outback dining experiences, and the opportunity to play in the three-day finale, including the Outback Queensland Masters Million Dollar Hole-In-One Challenge at the Birdsville Dunes Golf Club.
Queensland Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Golden Ticket was a money-can’t-buy experience.
“The Golden Ticket, with a shot at the million-dollar hole-in-one in Birdsville, is certain to become the talk of New Zealand’s golfing community,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Our message to New Zealanders is Queensland is open for business with a terrific line-up of winter getaways including the ultimate Outback golfing experience.
“The Outback Masters is predicted to bring more than 2500 visitors to the State’s most remote fairways and contribute $1.5 million to Queensland’s Outback visitor economies.
“Innovative events like the Outback Queensland Masters support Outback jobs, accommodation and transport providers, restaurants, cafes and tourism operators.
“For amateur Kiwi golfers, this is a once-in-a-lifetime Outback Queensland experience not to be missed.”
‘Golden Ticket’ winners are given special exemption within the Outback Queensland Masters rules, making them eligible to participate in the Million Dollar Hole-in-One Challenge without the requirement to play in qualifying rounds at two of the prior locations within Outback Queensland.
In outback terms, Birdsville is as remote as they come, deep in the heart of wild and isolated country. The town is home to 100 residents but has become accustomed to its population swelling with visitors for iconic events, stunning sunsets and Australia’s most iconic outback pub, the Birdsville Hotel.
It’s the first time in over two years that Kiwis will be able to take part in the series that spreads 2,000km+ across Outback Queensland (that’s more than the length of New Zealand!) to experience incredibly unique locations, golf courses and true blue outback hospitality under the stars of the Milky Way. While the 2021 event was a sell-out success, the Million Dollar Hole-In-One remains unclaimed.
Outback Queensland Tourism Association CEO, Denise Brown, said she is excited to welcome two lucky kiwis to Outback Queensland for the 2022 Outback Queensland Masters.
“The Outback Queensland Masters is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am thrilled to see Queensland open its arms to our New Zealand friends again,” said Denise Brown.
“Birdsville is a prime tourist destination, and we are excited for the Golden Ticket winners to experience an outback adventure like no-other.
“The recent La Nina rain has breathed new life into the region and the Birdsville Billabong is alive with local birdlife.
But if twitching doesn’t tickle their fancy, they can’t miss a sunset from the Big Red or sweet treats from the Birdsville Bakery,” she said.
Presented by Golf Australia, the Outback Queensland Masters is staged across six locations held over back-to-back weekends in Outback Queensland including Roma, Tambo, Barcaldine, Winton, Mount Isa and finishing in Birdsville.
Luke Bates, Golf Australia QLD & NT Manager said the sand greens are a challenge of a different kind for players; most not having experienced them before entering the series.
“Birdsville has built their new golf course specifically so they could host the event and it’s as red and dusty as you could imagine. We’re really hoping one skilled amateur strikes it rich this July in the desert in our Million Dollar Hole-In-One.
“This competition isn’t all about winning though, it’s all about the experience, discovering new places and meeting new people.
“The Outback Queensland Masters really highlights the character and friendliness of this part of the world to players too, and we can’t wait to share that with those joining the competition in 2022,” said Mr Bates.
The Outback Queensland Masters is presented by Golf Australia, with strategic partner Tourism & Events Queensland and with six local government councils.
The official tee off for 2022 will occur at the Roma Golf Club to be staged on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June.
